Black grouse

Tetrao tetrix

After the mallard and pigeon the black grouse is the most hunted bird in Finland, yearly bag being between 100.000 and 240.000 birds. Black grouse adapts to forest cultivation better than capercaillie and therefore is more widespread across the southern and central parts of the country. Hunting can be done using pointing dogs but also during early mornings near swamp areas where birds come to practice lekking, specially male birds can be more easily found from these lekking places.
